Weekly Reflection #4 – Graphic Creation
I LOVED the content this week. I am a big fan of Canva. I use Canva multiple times a week, for so many reasons! I was a big fan of PowerPoint back in the olden days and tried my best to create graphics and things like brochures on other platforms like pages and Vistaprint — but I am so much happier with Canva. I have used it for school projects, personal things like photo editing and invitations and for just about everything in between!
It was pretty cool today when one of the members of our Assignment #2 group came up and said, “I think we should make a graphic for our podcast platform.” I immediately said, “I can do that!” Every request she had, I knew what to do to make it happen on Canva. I find the platform so user-friendly and really enjoy all the features. I know there is a LOT that Canva can do that I don’t know about but I find myself learning something new all the time. Here is the graphic that I made with input from our group.

I think Canva could be used in the classroom for things like a “Shape of the Day” to have up on the board when the students arrive, for visuals throughout the day for certain subjects, for certain graphic organizers like flow charts and mind maps. Students could also use Canva to do individual and group projects, All About Me presentations and other assignments. There are a TON of worksheets and templates designed just for teachers on Canva. It’s simply an amazing resource. The amount of YouTube videos that people have made about Canva hacks is impressive. Here is one with some cool ideas like using a timer and making really helpful pdf documents out of graphics or worksheets.
We also learned how to make some fun little talking leaf creatures on a app called Chatterpix Kids . It was super easy to use. You take a photo, tell the app where you want the mouth of the character to be when prompted, record the voice and add some graphics and a border if you want and VOILA. You have a talking leaf creature. It was easy to upload to your device. The only feedback I have is that there were very limited graphics and backgrounds that you could add. I’m not sure if there is more content if you pay for a version of the app. We are going to use this app with students at a local elementary school next week. It should be exciting.
I also learned how to makes these beautiful textboxes today in class. Another classmate has used them in her blog and she showed me how to make them! I love them. What a great way to add some colour to a blog post. A little quick tip is to duplicate a box and change the text once you find the background colour that you want, especially if you customized it. It’s impossible to make the same exact gradient colours twice! I’ve added a screencast with instructions below.
