Stop Motion in Grade 3

After last week’s class I immediately knew I wanted to do some stop motion with some little friends. I gave them a little “lesson,” showed them some samples and gave them some suggestions and toys to create with. It didn’t take long before my 9 year old friend had an idea and spent the next 30 minutes taking almost 200 photos and made her very own stop motion creation. What I find fascinating about her creation was that she had no idea how to really do it and yet she tried and experimented and created a cool story about a “Playdate” — I can see how much more refined her skills became towards the end of the video. I think it’s pretty cool!

I really loved our learning in class and thoroughly enjoyed our in-situ where we spent time with a Grade 3 class of kids who were all very excited to create stop motion videos with us. Our two students had SO many ideas... after pairing them down they came up with a “drag race” that ended unexpectedly when 2 dragons swooped down and attacked the over-sized drivers that appeared out of nowhere. Their “desk pets” quickly came to the rescue and demolished the dragons. All the while, the poor race flag man, stood, unharmed and unfazed. Their smiles when they watched the end result was our sweet reward. There aren’t too many activities that I can think of where a WHOLE classroom of kids is engaged, creative and happy through the whole process. What a great idea! Thank you Allie for the opportunity.

Here are some photos and a video our stop motion experience. I can’t wait to do it again, with more students.
